Clinical Toolkit

Congratulations on passing your Pre-Clinical Post-Test!

You are ready to move onto the clinical component of the Nurse Refresher Program (NRP). As a reminder, NRP neither provides nor guarantees clinical placement. It is your responsibility to identify, secure, and coordinate with a clinical site for completion of the clinical component.

If you have not yet identified a clinical site willing to host your rotation, now is the time to do so. Some clinical sites have specific rotation request processes that must be initiated through NRP, so please inform nurserefresher@nurseleaders.org the names of the clinical sites you are interested in ahead of time. If the clinical site you are interested in is not one of these facilities, NRP recommends reaching out to an employee in the “education” or “student” department at a local hospital. Non-hospital —and specialized— clinical sites must be pre-approved by our Clinical Coordinator if you are an RN.

Once you have identified a willing clinical site, notify the NRP in order to validate a current Clinical Site Agreement or begin the process to execute a Clinical Site Agreement.

Pre-Clinical Requirements

Before you can begin your clinical rotation, you must complete and submit certain requirements through our compliance tracking system, Complio. These documents will be reviewed for approval prior to the start of your rotation.

Click here for the most up to date list of Pre-Clinical Requirements

Please inform the NRP Coordinator once you have created a Complio account and placed an order for the New Student Bundle.* This will ensure the NRP Coordinator is able to approve your order in a timely manner so that you can begin uploading documents.

*Please do not place an order for the standalone drug test. There is one included in the New Student Bundle for you.

Drug Screening:

  • Note that your drug screening must be completed within 30 days after your order for the New Student Bundle is approved.

 Background Check:

  • If you have any item on your background check that might negatively impact your ability to seek clinical placement, please consider writing a letter including the following types of information and then submitting it as a PDF file to nurserefresher@nurseleaders.org. Please note: This letter will only be submitted to the clinical site if they have an opening for a NRP participant and are willing to review your packet.

Here is an example letter draft:

“Dear Clinical Site Coordinator – I have been a practicing nurse since ___________. In ___________ (year) I recognized I had an issue with _______________ (substance use disorder, mental/physical health challenges, other) and surrendered my license. Following ___________________ (treatment, counseling, etc.) I am ready to regain my license. As such, I am completing the Nurse Refresher Program through the Idaho Center for Nursing, based on feedback from the Idaho Board of Nursing.”

If you have a misdemeanor or other item on your background check, please consider similarly describing the issue and how you have made amends (community service, paid a fine, etc.).

Clinical Documents

During your clinical rotation, you must review and complete the following documents with your preceptor(s):

Be sure to seek plentiful comments from your preceptor, because if any of the clinical documents are considered incomplete by the NRP Clinical Coordinator, they will be returned with feedback and you will be asked to return to your preceptor for revision.

Email these documents to NRP (nurserefresher@nurseleaders.org) at the conclusion of your clinical rotation. It may take up to 7-10 business days to receive results following document review by faculty.

If you are obtaining an Idaho license, your clinical nurse preceptor must also provide a letter on company letterhead which states you successfully completed the required clinical hours and an assessment of your competency level. This letter must be emailed directly to the Idaho Board of Nursing at hp-licensing@dopl.idaho.gov and copied to nurserefresher@nurseleaders.org.

Contact nurserefresher@nurseleaders.org with any questions.
